Inspired by Kim Jong Il's manifesto, The Cinema and Directing, and on a mission to stop a coal seam gas mine near her Sydney home, award-winning filmmaker Anna Broinowski went in search of creative wisdom in the strangest of places, Pyongyang, North Korea.

The Director is the Commander takes us behind the scenes of her shoot to give us a detailed account of her experiences and adventures in one of the most fascinating and perplexing countries on earth.

About the author:

Anna Broinowski fell into filmmaking by accident - when she uncovered Japan's queer, bikie and Otaku subcultures in the cult hit, Hell Bento! She has been working as a director/writer/producer ever since. Her last film Forbidden Lie$ about hoax author Norma Khoury, was one of the top ten highest grossing Australian theatrical documentaries of all time. Other films include Helen's War Romancing the Chakra and Sexing The Label. Awards have included 3 AFIs, the Rome Film Festival "Cult" Prize, a Walkley Award, Best Documentary at Al Jazeera, a NSW Premier's Literary Award, a Moscow Film Critics' Award, Best Director at Films Des Femmes, and Best non-fiction Screenplay from the Wrtier's Guild of America.

Anna was born in Tokyo and grew up in the Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam, Burma and Iran. This has given her a passion for exploding western cliches about the East.
