London: T. & W. Boone 1838. 8vo. Orig dark green blind-stamped cloth. Spines uniformly rebacked in calf to match. Complete with 2 engraved title-pages with vignettes 53 full-page engr. plates of which some are coloured num. text-illustrations maps of which some are coloured including the large folding map of the South Eastern portion of Australia at end of Vol. I as well as the 16pp. of publisher's adverts at the end of Vol. II. An excellent crisp set entirely complete. 1st edition. NOTE: Mitchell was sent out to N.S.W. as Deputy Surveyor-General in 1827 after serving in the Peninsular Campaigns. The first of his famous explorations was sent out in 1831 to search for a mythical river reported running Northward of the Liverpool Range by a convict. He penetrated as far as the Barwan on the Queensland frontier. The second journey was undertaken in 1835 to survey the course of the River Darling. The third expedition was to determine any possible connection between the Darling and Murray rivers. It was made in 1836 and resulted in the discovery of Australian Felix.
