NOTE: Thomas Hamilton was a leading writer for Blackwood's Magazine and a friend of Sir Walter Scott and William Wordsworth. His novel is set in Glasgow in the years just before the Industrial Revolution and reveals merchant and university life in Glasgow as well as the futility of war.
