London: Smith Elder and Co. (printed at the Chiswick Press) 1911. Quarto in full yellow calf with black lettering to front cover and spine. (viii 78pp.). With 6 original full-page etched aquatints each fully signed by the artist "Lionel Lindsay". This edition printed on hand-made paper is limited to 100 numbered copies this being copy No. 33 fully signed "J. Griffith Fairfax". Uncut and with the original tissue-guards opposite each plate. Magnificently produced at the Chiswick Press. Some foxing/offsetting of the plates otherwise a fine copy of a rare work. With photocopied typescripts of notes by Lionel Lindsay to his son Peter Lindsay pertaining to Lindsay's part in the making of the book and a photocopied typescript of a letter by Lindsay to Fairfax regarding unresolved recompense for same loosely inserted. A collection of poems by expatriate poet James Griffyth Fairfax (1886-1976) of the Sydney Morning Herald Fairfaxes beautifully illustrated by Lionel Lindsay (1874-1961) elder brother of Norman Lindsay and a notable figure in early twentieth-century Australian art. Lindsay was first recognised for his etchings in 1907 when he exhibited etchings of old buildings in The Rocks with the Society of Artists Sydney. In 1927 he held another extremely successful exhibition of etchings dry-points and wood-engravings at Colnaghi's London. Lindsay illustrated books by Henry Lawson and Steele Rudd and contributed to numerous periodicals such as The Hawklet The Bulletin and The Lone Hand. He was also an influential art critic and a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 1941 Lindsay was knighted for his services to Australian art. A rare and beautiful acquisition.
