Writers Live - The People's Park: Centennial Park - A History
8th May '14 @ Berkelouw Paddington

Few Australians know that the true story of Centennial Park, our most important public park, is a rollercoaster tale of political intrigue, personal battles, near ruin and a phoenix-like rise.

The People's Park is the story of a place that has found its way into the hearts of generations of Australians, and which continues to delight, challenge and be enjoyed by millions. It traces the history of the park from its humble beginnings as a swamp and a rocky outcrop, to "one of the grandest adornments of this country" recording the politics and bickering, struggle, threats, dark past and stunning development of the Park.

Professor Paul Ashton, author and Co-Director of the Australian Centre for Public History at UTS, describes Centennial Park as "potentially the most political patch of grass in existence". His new history of the Park, written with co-authors Kate Blackmore and Armanda Scorrano, has been a 25 year labour of love.
